Submit Manuscript

The Journal of Military History seeks primarily manuscripts rooted in archival or original research that will alter or bring into question an accepted historical narrative. It also publishes, on occasion, historiographic essays, research notes, and documents of interest.

Manuscripts should be saved and submitted as a Word file.

  • Double-spaced
  • Embedded footnotes
  • Chicago Manual of Style
  • c. 10,000 words, not counting notes
  • Illustration Guidelines.

DO NOT INCLUDE IDENTIFYING INFORMATION IN THE MANUSCRIPT

Your name and affiliation should not appear in the notes, the headers, or the electronic file information.

YOUR MANUSCRIPT SHOULD NOT BE UNDER CONSIDERATION

WITH ANY OTHER PUBLICATION WHILE IT IS WITH THE JMH

The submission of an article, book review, or other communication with the intention that it is to be published in this journal shall be taken as prima facie evidence that the author willingly transfers the copyright to the journal and its parent society, which will, however, freely grant the author the right to reprint his or her piece, if published, in the author’s own works. In the case of articles, upon acceptance the author will be sent a contract and an assignment of copyright.

Prospective authors should review carefully the Journal’s Open Access Policy.

The Society for Military History, the Virginia Military Institute, and the George C. Marshall Foundation disclaim responsibility for statements, either of fact or opinion, made by contributors.
